CHAPTER FIVE

GABE

Dylan: The new planner wants to meet you

Gabe: And is that a bad thing?

Dylan: It is if we want to keep her

I leave the restaurant where I’ve just had a lunch meeting and turn to my companion.

“Lovely lunch, Robert.”

He claps my shoulder. “It was great to see you again. Will you consider the offer? At the risk of repeating myself, we really want you, and I think our offer amply displays that.”

“It certainly does. I’ll think about it. I need to talk to Dylan first.”

“Of course. Give him my regards. He’s my secret weapon in drawing you to Devon. All his family are there, aren’t they?”

“They’re nuttier than a commune of eccentric squirrels,” I inform him.

He laughs, offers his hand to shake, and then raises his hand for a taxi. “I’ll speak to you soon.”

I nod and watch the taxi pull away. It’s a beautiful, cold, sunny afternoon, and rather than catch my own taxi back to the office, I decide to walk. I set off whistling cheerfully. I feel like a different man since I spoke to Dylan and Patricia. It’s also amazing what a few nights of proper sleep and a fantastic morning fuck can do for your state of mind. With all that and an excellent offer of a partnership in a prestigious firm in Exeter, this week is really looking up.

“Gabe,” someone calls, and I turn and smile at the sight of Joe coming out of an upmarket stationer. He’s holding a small box.

“Alright?” I say.

He grins and comes towards me. He’s wearing a slim-cut grey suit and the sun shines on his coal-black hair.

“Fine. Just picked these up before I head for a meeting with the bride.”

“Everything okay?”

“Hard to say. She hasn’t stopped crying since I met her.”

“Good grief. Well, at least Dylan doesn’t burst into tears, even if we do have less marital organisation than Britney Spears.”

He chuckles and gestures at the path. “You going somewhere?”

I nod. “I’m walking through the park and back to work.”

“Mind if I join you? My meeting’s close to your office.”

“Please do.”

We fall into step, and he starts a flow of easy conversation. It’s surprisingly nice to talk to him. I don’t usually do chit-chat, because it’s Dylan’s speciality, but Joe doesn’t irritate me, being clever and quick-witted. I have the sense of meeting an old friend with him, and it’s curiously pleasant. Of course, I suppose it helps that he’s spent fifty per cent of our acquaintance pissed.

We stroll down the path in the park. A breeze picks up, and leaves eddy around us in oranges and golds.

“How did you get into wedding planning?” I ask.

He smiles. “I was a manager at a small hotel. Jed, my current boss, was organising a wedding there, and we bonded over the extreme behaviour of the groom.”

“Really?”

“Yes. He seemed to feel life was one long stag party and kept referring to women as birds, which didn’t say too much for his chances of a long life.”

I laugh. “So, did Jed poach you?”

“He did.
